EURO.INCREASING COUNTRIES ADOPTING IT.A SLAUGHTER TO SOVEREIGNISTS,POPULISTS AND DEMAGOGUALS

When it was introduced between 1999 and 2002, 11 of the 15 states that were part of the European Union joined the single currency. Italy did so as well, making some mistakes both in the calculation of parity with the Lira and in the procedures for replacing the old Italian currency. After almost 25 years, the countries adopting the Euro are 21 out of 27.If it was that devil that the sovereignists and populists describe with a light heart(and empty mind) why is it that instead of decreasing, the number of states that want the single European currency is increasing? Are they all crazy or dumb?

The truth is that behind the demand for the Euro is the realization that national currencies give less certainty, less stability and ultimately increase financial risks. And this should also make people think about the need for countries that share the currency to also share other essential aspects such as fiscal policy, defense policy and foreign policy. Our times are moving in the direction of overcoming selfishness and narrow national horizons with a view to a collective strengthening of states and peoples who know they have a common destiny. In short. the expansion of the euro area will also have to involve greater European unification toward the goal of the United States of Europe. And let it not be said ,as is the case with NATO, that expansion is a form of conquest. Conquest of what and by whom?

NATO conquered no state, violated no national sovereignty did not “invade” any country: it only expanded common security without threatening anyone but offering a protective umbrella that individual national defenses would not be able to support. Thus the Euro today is proof that European peoples and states are stronger if they are united, if they agree to give up chunks of their sovereignty in order to be individually and collectively stronger and more solid and less exposed to storms.

Unfortunately, the EU leadership and the heads of state and government, who have the final say, fail to make a leap forward in’ quality, and instead of making real progress toward the United States of Europe, they rush to rallies to tickle national, often nationalist, instincts, thinking in this way to win consensus and ignoring that in doing so they do harm to their own peoples whom they proclaim to want to defend. Orban and his likes are the killers of the idea on which the Europe desired by De Gasperi, Adenauer and Schumann was born.

It would take a jolt of foresight, a long-term vision to make people understand what is obvious: in the face of the emergence of global giants such as China , in the face of the self-defeating closing in on itself of Trump's America, no European country alone will be able to be a key player in the future global, economic, political and strategic balances. Therefore, the right man who should have the reins of the European Commission is certainly not the mediocre Ursula von der Leyen.

Better it would be for everyone if Mario Draghi were in his place;:the man who saved the Euro-despite the resistance and short-sightedness of Germany and France-is the only one who could save Europe from decline and revive it as an economic, social and political power in a world that is inexorably sliding toward the hegemony of China, which has already reduced Russia to one of its colonies.
