On Iran Trump has made the right choice. And it doesn't take much to see that, if you abandon the usual platitudes and hypocrisies.
Did he violate international law? It has re-established it. By preventing a state that wants to destroy Israel, that has been destabilizing Lebanon for decades, that through the Houthis holds the Gulf monarchies in check, from having the nuclear weapon that would allow it to become the master of the Middle East.
How many times has Iran violated international law without good souls tearing up like they do now against Trump?
But do these influential geopolitical experts really think that Trump's choice bothered Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, New Syria, the Emirates, Kuwait, Egypt and even India? All these states were looking forward to Iran's nuclear policy being struck dead. But, of course, they could not say that. Trump solved their problem. And now Iran has to take it down a notch. An Iran without the atomic bomb and with a humiliated and flattened regime suits everyone in the Middle East. Better would be if this Iran were led not by a bloodthirsty and threatening theocracy but by a moderate and pragmatic regime.
But, in the meantime, the cross effect of the U.S. and Israeli bombs has dealt a massive blow to the power of the theocrat clique, opening leaks within it and weakening the repressive structure that answers to Khamenei, now a leader with no future
Iran cannot close the Strait of Hormuz lest it also antagonize China. It can only do some harmless fireworks over the empty American bases without causing any serious damage or casualties. That leaves , however, terrorism, of which Iran is a skilled maneuverer.....about international law allegedly violated by Trump.
But now we need to finish the job : eradicate Hezbollah from Lebanon and restore full sovereignty to the cedar country; finally eliminate Hamas and endow the Palestinian National Authority with credibility and strength; and dislodge the Houthi terrorist state. All this is possible today because Iran will not be able to rely on the atomic bomb for long and because the regime has its wings broken by Israeli and U.S. bombing.
But there is a problem .And it is the criminal obstinacy of Netanyahu and the Israeli extreme right against the Palestinian people. If Israel today pointed the way out , two peoples two states, the Abrahamic covenants sought by Trump would resume, the Middle East would stabilize and Iran would be condemned to isolation. And that would facilitate the regime change that those people have been waiting for since 1979. And here again America's role becomes important. Trump today has strong claims to make on Netanyahu. Have the courage to impose on him the final closure of the Palestinian issue not by dismemberment of that people but by the allocation of land and internationally guaranteed sovereignty to the Palestinians in peaceful coexistence with Israel. If Trump wants to go down in history this is the golden opportunity.
And Europe should, politely and insistently, persuade him to take this step....For his glory....and for the serenity of Israel, the Palestinians of us all . And also to make Iran understand that its terrible page of obscurantist history since 1979 is over and that it is time for a change .
President Trump does not follow the advice of Bannon and MAGA extremists, let them play with their slogans. Think, rather, of America's true greatness, which is what it is if the U.S. runs the world chessboards as a protagonist and not as an isolationist beating a retreat, using force with measure and only when strictly necessary. That will make you a great president, not the rest.
