Dental and Aesthetic Care In Albania. The Recommendations of the Italian Embassy

The Italian Embassy in Tirana has published on its website an important communiqué with a series of indications aimed at protecting Italian citizens who intend to undergo dental and cosmetic treatment in Albania. It is a document that calls for behavior inspired by prudence and wisdom to avoid problems and unfortunate situations. Here is the text

There is an increase in the number of compatriots traveling to Albania to undergo dental and aesthetic care, attracted by cheaper costs than in Italy. The range of private clinics offering these types of services is quite extensive. Often, in addition to treatment, "packages" are also offered that include transportation and hotels, but it is recommended in this regard that you always have full control over your travel and overnight stays, having tickets, reservations, travel documents and your phone with you.

The proposed offerings are not always good and correspond to satisfactory quality standards.
Therefore, it is recommended to consider very carefully which clinics and professionals to rely on, especially with regard to price in relation to the service and materials used. It is therefore useful to make a comparison with similar services available in Italy, also taking into account the protections available in case of malpractice incidents and the type of medical liability insurance with which the practitioners in question are covered.

It should be noted that the Embassy of Italy in Tirana. not has a list of recommended clinics and cannot recommend or advise against facilities. The choice of which clinics to trust and the responsibility for that choice rests with individual users. However, the Embassy has taken strong action to raise awareness and urge the Albanian health authorities to enforce the adoption of higher standards and implement stricter controls on local health workers.

Before traveling to Albania for dental or cosmetic services, it is strongly recommended that an insurance policy be taken out that provides coverage for additional medical expenses that may be necessary after the procedure, including for any medical air repatriation (or transfer to another country) of the patient in case of emergency. It is also recommended that the clinic be provided with a contact of family members or relatives to be heard from in case of an emergency.

For any emergency medical repatriation, please refer to the relevant Embassy website section. To challenge incidents of malpractice, it is advisable to file a complaint at the nearest police station, possibly with the support of an attorney (see attached list).

It should also be remembered that, with respect to the availability of medicines locally, while it is possible to obtain them for the most part, it is advisable to bring with you from Italy what you need to take habitually. If the quantities needed are large, in anticipation of a prolonged stay, they should be accompanied by a prescription in order to avoid checks and unpleasant consequences at the border.
