New decision by the Italian government to attempt to use facilities dedicated to irregular migrants found in Albania. Rome anxiously awaits the European Court of Justice's response on the list of countries of origin of migrants that can be deemed safe. In the meantime, it decides to immediately use the 49 places in the Gjader center that are already usable as a detention center for deportations. According to Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, these places can become 140 without further investment.
The Italian government had intended to convert the entire Gjader center into a center for the deportation of irregular migrants present in Italy, but this would have required a change in the agreement between Rome and Tirana.
For now, therefore, Giorgia Meloni does not change the pact made with Edi Rama but will try to use at least part of this structure.
The Italian government's decision is highly criticized by oppositions, not least because migrants who will be brought to Gjader from Italy will have to return to Italian territory in order to be deported. And this certainly appears to be a costly complication.
