ITALY HINGE OR PICK FOR EUROPE

ITALY CERN OR GRIMALDEL FOR EUROPE

It is a potentially "magical" moment for our country in international politics. In Rome, the government is firmly in the saddle, despite frequent internal mutterings. The ministries invested by resignations given or about to come are marginal, and no reshuffle seems on the horizon that would challenge the delicate balance in the right-of-center. Instead, a deep crisis reigns in Paris and Berlin, not only economic but also institutional. France and Germany are searching for difficult majorities and the political stability that had always been their boast vis-à-vis the comings and goings of governments in Italy.

Moreover, the Prime Minister, with an objective ability that must be credited to her, has managed to establish excellent personal relations with Musk and , through him, also with Trump, having loyally supported all the choices made by Biden.

Meloni has many cards in her hand today that she can play on the international chessboard and especially in Europe. But it will not be easy for her to choose the right course.

Trump does not like Europe and wants its crumbling, much the same as Putin. Meloni will therefore be pressed by Washington not to stand in the way of Trump's miserable game. In return she will be offered favorable treatment for Italy in the trade war that will sweep the Old Continent.

These American pressures will be joined by those from the various souls of the right-wing, which is advancing just about everywhere in Europe and which sees Meloni as its most influential leader.

Both pushes, the American push and the push of the European right, go against the strengthening of the European Union and in a sovereignist direction.

What will our Prime Minister do? After years of open hostility to Europe, the euro and constant polemics against Brussels, since September 2022 Meloni had changed her tune, even managing to talk some sense into her faithful friend Orban. But now? Will she use her bargaining power to hinge and mitigate the centrifugal and destructive pushes against Europe? Or will he allow himself to be swayed by the Donaldelonism ( o Trumpmuskismo) and will it act as a pick to tip the European balance by triggering a terrifying backward march that would weaken the Union at the very moment when the balance of power in a shattered world is being redefined?

Oppositions should immediately,in Parliament and in public debate, start a serious and non-sectarian confrontation with the majority. It is a matter of identifying a trajectory that harnesses the bargaining power of our government to give Europe a stronger political role with Italy in a leading position in a new EU season. As Alcide De Gasperi would have wished
