Ukraine and us, the moment of truth

Haste and short-sightedness are among the two most serious flaws of our democracies infected by the social-induced syndrome in which everything must unfold quickly and under the threat of boredom that is always lurking. And so we apply these ways even to the most complex problems that would instead require forward-looking visions and the patient determination not to "stew" with irresponsible superficiality.

Ukraine is a victim of this myopia and together frenzy of turbo-democracies.

Help timid and mistimed

In February 2022, few realistically believed that Ukraine would oppose the Russian invasion at all costs. After a few weeks, the heroic resistance of the people of Kyiv, the courage shown by President Zelesnky, and the monstrous massacres carried out by the Russians convinced almost every country in the West that Ukraine deserved to be helped to defend itself. But this aid was always somewhat timid and conditioned by the fear that the Ukrainians might misuse it. Long-range missiles were delivered a year late, some tanks endowed with special warfare effectiveness were supplied with dropper drops. Pilot training and the supply of combat aircraft have been slowed to the point that F16s will begin flying in Ukrainian skies only in the fall if all goes well. In the meantime, the Ukrainian army has retaken a significant part of the territories but the lack of attacks from the air has made it possible for the Russians to build huge trenches that Kyiv's counteroffensive has failed to break through.

The newfound bellicism of Russia's arms factory

Meanwhile, Putin's bellicism has turned the entire Russian industry into a 0army factory supported by the supply of armaments from two rogue countries such as Iran and North Korea. The usual common China has moved ambiguously by helping Moscow under the radar but without exaggerating or taking blatant actions. While all this was going on the West began to feel stomach aches, "fatigue" over the war, and increasingly listened to the trumpets of pacifism over the skin of others. Fed to the public was given a petty, obnoxious and mendacious version of events which is this: we helped Kyiiv, but Russia is stronger , so Ukraine must come to terms and settle without aspiring any more for the liberation of its territory illegally invaded by Putin.

Narrow and short-sighted views of part of the West

A narrative of convenience that serves to cover up the desire to get rid of the anguish of war as soon as possible, of its costs in order to relieve oneself of the responsibilities it imposes on those who want to stand by those who are right and have suffered monstrous aggression.

Unfortunately, this narrative has also found its way into what should be the sanctuary of the defense of freedom, the U.S. Congress, which for months has been blocking the 60 billion in aid appropriated by President Biden. A narrow-minded, short-sighted and in the long run suicidal view is transforming the U.S. from a principal supporter of Ukraine's fight against Russia into a country that cuts off a friend's oxygen just when it needs it most.

Avoiding moral and political errors of historic significance

It is a sad and inglorious page in American history whose responsibility falls on that part of the Republicans who chasing the sirens of Trump do not understand that the defeat of Ukraine means the victory of Putin and the incentive for anti-Western dictatorships to become more and more aggressive and threatening.

The coming months will be crucial for the future not only of Ukraine but of the whole of Europe and also for the role of the United States. Abandoning the Ukrainian people to their fate, forcing them in fact to ascend to pacts with the aggressor under weak conditions would be a moral disgrace for the West, a kind of betrayal and also a historical mistake whose consequences will weigh on the future of our children.
