Roman Port.Tender for major international Hub kicks off

With the start of the international bidding process for the expansion and upgrading of the commercial port four miles from the city center, a very important page opens for Durres that will transform it into a strategically important hub for North Macedonia, Kosovo and NATO.

In fact, the new Roman port will be an international hub handling 2 million TEUs per year and will develop trade not only domestically but also from the Lower Adriatic area, with a spillover to Albania's GDP of about 3%. In the port co will also be space for a NATO naval base that will strengthen Albania's role in the Atlantic Alliance.

The planned expenditure is 391 million euros, entirely borne by the state and without foreign funding. It will be used to achieve a depth twice that of the current port of Durres and to build a container terminal three times larger than that of the current port located in the city

The design was carried out by Royal Haskoning DHV a Dutch engineering firm that will oversee the entire bidding process, which between March and April should lead to the signing of the contract with the companyà who will be awarded the tender.

The construction of the new Roman Port will be welded with the radical transformation of the existing port of Durrës after the Durrës Yacht & Marina project was approved. The agreement between the Tirana government and Eagle Hills Real Estate Development, owned by the real estate developer, Emir Mohamed Ali Alabbar, owner of Abu Dhabi-based Emaar Properties (United Arab Emirates), envisages a 2.5 billion investment to build a state-of-the-art marina with a large area of apartments, hotels, restaurants and other tourist services on the waterfront. In practice, the port of Durrës will no longer have commercial activities. The giant cranes will disappear and the cruise ship connections will remain.
