SALIS vs MELONI( AND SCHLEIN) TWO OPPOSITE STYLES

Meloni avoids direct confrontation with Schlein. And misses twice.

Because she shows that she is afraid of them and because she does not take advantage of the objective advantage she has: the rutilant style of the Pd leader, which is very similar to her own, Meloni has been practicing it for at least 20 years and knows how to adapt it to circumstances, while Schlein has only been experimenting with it for 3 years forced to chase the ways of the Prime Minister

Silvia Salis, mayor of Genoa, on the other hand, in the various interviews she gives, has a style totally opposite to Meloni's ( and Schlein's as well). When she answers questions she is not a raging river, or worse, a ruinous and noisy torrent like the other two, but she is calm in her tone of voice, measured in her verbal expressions, avoids overflowing and bombastic adjectives but is solid in her arguments; she reassures with a facial expression that does not convey arrogance, uncertainty, aggression but neither does it convey coldness and detachment.

While the other two are good at constructing polemical phrases whose pyrotechnical effect lasts only a few seconds, elicits applause, but does not induce thought, Salis aims to leave a non-ephemeral trace of what he says, making himself heard, inviting reflection on suyoi topics and eschewing the staging of shouted, circus-like politics.

One could say, to stay in the metaphor of entertainment. that while Meloni and Schlein make deteriorating television , Salis makes classy theater.

If Salis -as I hope- should be chosen to lead the center-left coalition in the next general election, I believe that it will be Meloni who will have to change register , to divest herself of her congenial paraphernalia of the angry( after 5 years of government with whom could she be angry if not with herself?) and to be confronted with Salis' style that is more concrete, stringent and gives no room for escapes from reality or loopholes in jokes peer to avoid real problems.

It would be good for democracy: because people would start to turn down the volume, stop seeking consensus with debates about nothing by turluping the citizens -who then do not go to vote also because they are fed up with what Berlusconi called-generously-the theater of politics and which is actually a kind of trash from the worst TV.

In short, the Salis style could help politics regain credibility, regardless of left or right-wing orientations. The credibility that comes from attention to problems and the strength of arguments and not from the distraction caused by the avant-garde of current politics, by the vacuous rattling of snappy phrases that have so far made the fortune mainly of talk-show hosts interested promoters of a pseudo democracy of fatuous fires, of intolerance erected as a system in a new Hobbesian political climate of “homo homini lupus” in which the “beauty” consists in seeing the people's representatives at each other's throats like enraged gladiators without explaining anything to the citizens who are only called upon to use the thumbs-down towards the alleged loser.
