"Secure EU".Defense and common foreign policy. More money to spend better.

I am an ultra-confident and combative pro-European. But I must say that, for the second time, Ursula von der Leyen gets her words wrong. And ,you know, words matter, especially when talking about sensitive things like wars , weapons etc....

To support Ukraine has always used the expression "victory over Russia." It would have been better to call things by their real name: for three years there has not been a war AGAINST Russia but a war FOR the liberation of Ukraine from an invading country. This is not a subtlety. even in the emotional perception of public opinion. If since February 2022 Europe had used the expression "war of liberation" surely the consensus toward European aid to Kyiv would have been more solid and credible.

Now Ursula is wrong again. The plan for military investment should not be called "Rearm Europe," but "SECURE Europe." Here again the difference is substantial.

The idea of rearming gives an image of aggression and confines defense only to the military sphere. Instead, Europe must say to its citizens: we must spend more and better on our defense; we do not want to attack anyone but we want to outline a common foreign policy strategy to strengthen our security. This is no small thing.

Finally, the plan. Today the EU states commit-much to the military 326 billion, 1.9% of European GDP . If we increased annual spending by another 160 billion we would reach 3%. Remember that the U.S. spends 806 billion a year but is an imperial power that has to keep areas of the 5 continents under control. Europe does not have the same burdens. We only need to protect our borders, our skies and our seas. By spending well half of what the U.S. spends we could effectively ensure our security, and deter those with intentions to do us harm, also with a view to less dependence on U.S. support.

Welcome spending more, welcome extraordinary urgent investment. Perhaps even 500 billion might be enough. But all this must be included in a community rationalization plan of at least 70% of national military spending . To give more money to each state and to continue, as it happens, to spend each one for itself is to use this money irrationally. So :let's strengthen European defense, spend more and better, and think more far-sightedly about our alliances so that we don't end up in the perverse game of the three empires (U.S., Russia, China) that will do so much harm to the world.
