One more year of waiting and then, finally, the ordeal of those who have to travel between Durres,Tirana and Rinas airport will end.
The general director of Albanian Railways, Ergys Verdho, announced in an interview with ATSH that in early 2027 the railway line , currently ready at 87% will be completed while work on signaling, telecommunications and construction of new stations in Tirana, Kashar, Vora, Sukth, Shkozet, Durres, "Epoka" University and Rinas is underway.
The main activity that will take place in 2026 will be electrification. In fact, the rail link will be operated with electric trains that can reach speeds of 120kmh. The electrification will be financed through a loan from the EBRD and a contribution from the European Commission through an international competition.
The initial project has been supplemented with a 4km extension that will bring the terminal into the heart of the capital city
When the work is completed from downtown Tirana to "Mother Teresa" airport will take only 10 minutes, from Tirana to Durres about 26 minutes.
A breakthrough in public rail transportation is finally looming for Albania, which should shorten distances between different parts of the country and facilitate travel ,reducing pollution.
This strategy includes the integration of Albania into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), of which Albania is a part in the core and global corridors.
Priority projects include Corridor VIII (Durres - Rrogozhinë - Elbasan - Pogradec) and the Vorë - Hani i Hotit line, which will ensure regional and international connections with neighboring countries and, through them, with the European rail network.New projects financed with domestic resources will start in 2026: the Nation's Railway (Shkodër-Gjakova), the Vlora-Vlora International Airport line, and the revamping of the Rrogozhinë-Fier-Valona section.
It is a major challenge that will require not only investment in infrastructure but also a strong commitment to staff training
