As was to be expected, everything is being talked about in this election campaign except what Europe the various parties want to propose to the people to ask for their vote. Domestic political issues predominate abundantly over European ones. There is talk of unlikely alchemy for the formation of a majority in the 'europarliament, there is the usual tototo nomination for the leadership of the Commission. And nothing else.
Most bewildered by this way of campaigning are young people. Unlike other generations, those born in this century have always breathed European air, they have known neither the lira nor the use of passports to travel around Europe, they are in touch with friends and fellow European students, they have spent or will spend the months of the Erasmus program in one of the 27 members of the Union. For these young people, the European horizon is an indispensable paradigm. But they would like to better understand which model of Europe can help them live better.
Let us try to describe it outside party schematics.
It needs a Safer Europe that it does not have to fear threats to either its territory or its democracy. Common defense costs less than defense entrusted to individual countries.
It needs a Europe bold in growth and not just strict about keeping accounts in order. To do this, it must have a common industrial policy creating European "champions" in strategic sectors capable of competing head-on with other economic "empires".But we also need a common fiscal policy that puts all member countries on an equal footing to improve ,efficiency and productivity.
It needs a More socially just Europe and thus with programs that combat poverty and marginalization.
It needs a Europe of peoples and not of bureaucracies, with a few clear rules and respectful of some national peculiarities.
Finally, a' Europe of freedoms and democratic participation, because the European dream was born after the tragedy of the dictatorships that led to World War II.
A 'Europe with these characteristics is friendly to peoples and especially to young people and can be the center of gravity that stabilizes a world in disarray.
